Chefs Plate VS. HelloFresh : An In-Depth Comparison

Chefs Plate VS. HelloFresh

If you’re thinking about trying one of the top meal kit services available in Canada then you’ve no doubt seen some of the almost “too good to be true” advertisements from companies like Chefs Plate and HelloFresh. With offers such as $2.99 per serving and free breakfast for life, which does sound pretty attractive, is there really value to you in the long term?

In this comparison of Chefs Plate vs. HelloFresh I will shed some light on these two meal kit delivery services and provide you with everything you need to know, in order to decide which one is the best for you.

But before I dig into the details, I want to provide you with a full disclosure.

TheQuickDish.com is a review site, which focuses on reviewing Canadian meal kit delivery services and subscription boxes.

Why am I mentioning this?

The reason is simple: transparency.

These commissions do not affect you, the customer. If anything they can ensure that you are getting the very best deal as a first time customer.

You are welcome to review our full earrings disclaimer for more information.

And with that said, our reviews and comparisons are objective and honest, and we will never give a better rating to a meal kit provider based on any incentives. While both Chefs plate and HelloFresh offer a comparable service, this comparison is based on both our personal experience, and that of a wider customer base.

We’d also love your feedback. If you end up trying any of the meal kits we review, let us know what you think of the service, whether good or bad. We want to hear from you, and so do other who view our site.

So if that sounds good to you, let’s dive into the comparison of Chefs Plate vs. HelloFresh.

Our Verdict Up Front

I’ve thought a great deal about what information would be of the most value to you, the reader. And when I think about what I want to see in a comparison, I realize that personally, I want the results up front. I’d prefer not to have to scroll through all the nitty gritty to get to the conclusion of which is the better service

And yes of course, I will provide you with all the information you’d expect in a meal kit comparison, like prices, recipes and what not. But I’m going to cut to the chase here early on.

So here it is.

Having subscribed to both HelloFresh and Chefs Plate at different points, and for extended periods, here are my thoughts on both of these meal kits.

Chefs Plate is known as the “most affordable meal kit in Canada” and that is the truth, but in my opinion it comes at a cost to variety and the overall quality. That’s not to say that HelloFresh is perfect by any means, and without some quality issues as well.

But when I think about the reasons why I subscribe to these services in the first place, they need to check a few boxes.

Are they convenient and save time? Yes, both Chefs Plate and HelloFresh tick that box.

Is there enough variety and dietary options? HelloFresh more so than Chefs Plate.

How about the value beyond the first time customer promo offer? When paying full price, we’ve been more happy overall with the HelloFresh meal kits, compared to the ones from Chefs Plate. There have been less instances of ingredient quality issues, and more variety to keep us interested.

So for me, my choice goes to HelloFresh. But that may be different for you. You may be more focused on the total cost of the service, rather than the amount of variety they offer.

You may try them both and decide that you’d prefer to go with a meal kit service that offers even more diversity of menu such as GoodFood.

Pricing Comparison

So the first real side-by-side comparison we’ll do here is to look at the plans and prices of these two meal kit services.

And what I will say right off the bat, is if budget is your primary focus, then Chefs Plate is the clear winner, both with the first time customer promo, and at the full price. Also, Chefs Plate is the only service to offer a 2 recipe per week plan.

If you are looking for a service that provides more variety, and more dietary options, HelloFresh is my advice to you.

Both meal kit delivery services are subscription based, which means that they will automatically renew on a set date. Any meal selections, modifications or changes to your subscription must be done before the deadline. My advice is to visit the Help section on the respective website for full details.

There is no minimum commitment. HelloFresh and Chefs Plate allow you to skip a week, or more at any given time. You can cancel your subscription, or reactivate at any time. You are free to sign up, try the first time customer promo, and cancel after that if you like.

Here is the current 2024 price comparison of Chefs Plate vs. HelloFresh. Please note that we list prices without exclusive discounts to ensure a fair and transparent comparison of the actual costs.

At the bottom of each price guide I will include a link to the first time customer promo with details of the offer. Again, these are our referral links which provide you with deep discounts.

Meal Selection

After reviewing the different plans and prices for HelloFresh and Chefs Plate, let’s look at the meal selection and options for each of these meal kit delivery services.

When it comes right down to it, both Chefs Plate and HelloFresh offer similar recipes. And that shouldn’t come as much of a surprise seeing as Chefs Plate is actually now owned by HelloFresh. Over time I’ve noticed many features on Chefs Plate, starting to mimic what I see on HelloFresh.

With that said, there are definitely some differences in what each of these services offer.

As mentioned in the intro, HelloFresh offers more variety and options than Chefs Plate. You can tailor your weekly menu by choosing any, or all categories depending on your preferences

  • Mostly Meat
  • Family Friendly (at least 5 per week)
  • Carb Smart (at least 2 per week)
  • Calorie Smart (at least 2 per week)
  • Vegetarian (at least 5 per week)
  • Quick & Easy (at least 5 per week)
  • Pescatarian
  • High Protein

They offer 35 unique recipes per week that cover a range of cuisines from classic dishes to premium, or Special dishes. Please note that if you select a premium recipe option, there is an additional charge added. While HelloFresh does not offer recipes for specific dietary restrictions such as Vegan, or Gluten Free, I have recently noticed one off recipes for Keto diets. This may be something we see more of from HelloFresh in the near future.

Chefs Plate uses a similar filter for meal preferences to Hellofresh. However it’s much more simplified.
You can choose from the following main categories, and from 25 fresh recipes per week.

  • Meat & Vegetables
  • Vegetarian
  • Family Friendly

Since the Chefs Plate main filter is more basic, each category contains sub categories if you want to look at it that way. For example, Chefs Plate further categorized their weekly recipes as either Spicy, 15-Min meal, Pub Faves, Packed Plates, Premium, Monthly Fave, or Steakhouse Fave.

Notice how they do not offer a Carb Smart, or Calorie Smart option, nor do they venture further into any other dietary restriction, other than vegetarian options. Chefs Plate does offer a Premium recipe each week, which comes with an additional charge.

Quality of Ingredients

If you’re like me you may be wondering how Chefs Plate can offer a similar product and service to HelloFresh but at 25-30% of the cost. My immediate concern was that Chefs Plate would use lower quality ingredients in their meal kits. However, after trying both of these meal kits on several occasions I’ve come to realize that is not necessarily the case.

Both Chefs Plate and HelloFresh claim to source their ingredients from local suppliers and farmers across Canada wherever possible. And in my experiences, the ingredients in each meal kit have been of similar quality.

Both services have minor issues, such as wilting leafy greens, or slightly less attractive root veggies. I think it’s important to temper your expectations somewhat when it comes to meal kit ingredients. Considering how the ingredients are processed and packed then shipped, there is always the potential for some minor quality issues. I’m not suggesting that you should accept rotten vegetables or anything like that, of course not. I’m just saying that by the time the ingredients are processed, packed and shipped to you, there is a high likelihood of some deteriorating quality.

Chefs plate vs. HelloFresh quality of ingredients.

With that said, I never experienced any issues with the meat products, or other ingredients in our orders other than the vegetable. That also means I’ve never had to reach out to customer services to raise a complaint. When I read the reviews on TrustPilot, one common thread seems to be a lack of customer service on the part of both HelloFresh and Chefs Plate. And this mainly stems from customers reaching out who are unhappy with the quality of ingredients.

The Bottom Line

While comparing Chefs Plate vs. HelloFresh I’ve found that both offer a similar quality product and service, with Chefs Plate being more affordable, but offering less variety and overall options. HelloFresh is slightly more expensive, however their recipes and variety is just a little bit more appealing to me.

Here is my suggestion to you.

Both HelloFresh and Chefs Plate offer huge discounts to first time customers. So if you are considering trying one or the other, take advantage of our referral discount, try one of the meal kit services, then pause your account, then try the other. That could be up to 8 weeks of meal kit delivery, a phenomenal discount. Then, if you find that you enjoy one more than the other, simply cancel the other subscription.
